Learning Corridor
Project type
Micro-Architecture
Date
March, 2026
Location
Sydney, NSW
The Learning Corridor proposes the transformation of an underused underground pedestrian arcade in central Sydney into a distributed learning environment shared by multiple universities. Located between Central Station and Sydney’s largest education district, the corridor sits within a one-kilometre radius of the University of Sydney, the University of Technology Sydney (UTS), and TAFE NSW—an area that hosts more than 135,000 students and connects to over 270,000 daily commuters passing through Central Station.
The project reimagines vacant retail storefronts along the corridor as a network of small-scale learning spaces embedded within the city’s everyday circulation. Lightweight micro-architectural structures are inserted into empty shops to create study pods, collaborative tables, and informal student commons. Rather than concentrating academic space inside campus buildings, the proposal distributes learning environments across the urban fabric.
By reusing existing infrastructure and activating vacant commercial spaces, the Learning Corridor transforms a transitional passage into a shared academic spine connecting Sydney’s universities. The project explores how small architectural interventions can extend educational infrastructure beyond the boundaries of campus and integrate learning into the everyday life of the city.
