Adaptive House

Project type

Housing

Date

May 2026

Location

Sydney, NSW

A prefabricated multi-level housing system designed to evolve alongside changing family structures, living arrangements, and demographic conditions over time.

The project is based on a stackable studio module capable of forming a four-story residential building without requiring an elevator, using an external circulation stair to simplify construction, reduce maintenance, and maximize usable interior area.

The system is conceived as a flexible residential framework that can operate in multiple configurations, including:

independent single-occupancy living
multi-generational family housing
dual-family occupation
or hybrid living arrangements that can transform over time as family dynamics change

As children grow, households expand or contract, or ownership structures shift, the building can adapt through the reconfiguration of individual levels while maintaining the overall architectural system.

Designed around prefabricated construction principles, the project explores how adaptable housing systems can support long-term residential flexibility while responding to increasing pressures around affordability, density, and demographic change.
